Insurance Coverage Helps!
Most insurance companies do not automatically recognize our therapeutic tricycles as a covered device today. We are currently working to get our products on their pre-approved lists. In the meantime, you can submit a request for coverage directly to your insurance provider. Many of our customers have been successful in getting coverage using this method.
To submit a request for insurance coverage for a TheraTrike™ tricycle, try the following:
- A doctor or therapist will need to write a prescription and, sometimes, a “Letter of Necessity” for the product. IMPORTANT! Have them call it a “Therapeutic Hip Extensor Device”. (Some insurance companies will think that a tricycle is only for recreation and not for therapy, so the word “device” works better.)
- Sometimes a letter is required showing that TheraTrike is the only manufacturer of this patented technology, so a cost comparison will not be required. The signed letter is available from TheraTrike and can be mailed or faxed to you.
- If the initial submission to the insurance company is rejected (which commonly happens), write a letter appealing the decision. Address any questions or concerns the company has and explain how the child will benefit, listing such things as
- studies have proven that use of this device improves gait by utilizing and exercising the hip extensor muscles
- the device helps improve balance and coordination
- the child cannot perform regular circular pedaling, but can propel this device where no circular pedaling is required
- using the device builds self-esteem in the child
Most often, the request is accepted the second time. Depending on your insurance company, once they approve the request, you can get the tricycle in one of two ways.
- Give the prescription and our contact information to a medical supply store in your area. They will order the tricycle from TheraTrike and bill your insurance company.
- You can purchase the tricycle directly from TheraTrike and request a reimbursement from the insurance company.
